Introducing Your Horse To Cow Work

By August 29, 2012 Trainers

This last weekend I attended a two day clinic at Trinity Ranch (one mile from my home in New Mexico) on working cows. A really outstanding clinic about what your horse needs to be able to do to work cows followed by practice actually working them.

John and Cat Parks who own the ranch and put on the clinic do an exceptional job of helping people introduce their horses to cows. Lots of exercises with your horse on abilities needed to work cows – and then exercises with cows teaching the horse specifically what you want them to do at given times. And it was a whole lot of fun.

The last event we did at the clinic was the traditional competition of team sorting and my two partners both were on Friesian horses who had never seen a cow. Wow, all the preparation they had done really worked. I quite frankly didn’t think it was possible but they did great. Nothing like a huge black horse realizing he can control that pesky cow.

Highly recommend these folks if you want to introduce your horse to cow work!
