Richard Allen Beal and his family live near Santa Fe, New Mexico, in the town of Lamy (population 218) overlooking the beautiful Galisteo Basin. He is an avid cowboy and owner of one of the most successful cowboy buckle stores on the Internet, Beal’s Cowboy Buckles™.
His wife Kathy is a fashion designer, contemporary visual artist, photographer, Interfaith Minister, and Reiki Master. She’s also the Chief Financial Officer for Silicon Valley entrepreneur Eric Hahn and owns a business called Kathy Beal Signature™ selling her own visual artistry on high end luxury silk scarves.
Richard has two grown children. Andrew lives in Salt Lake City, Utah where he is Executive Director of Hyperbaric Medicine for the Salt Lake Medical Regional Center. He also has trained as a professional diver, with a medical specialty, at the College of Oceaneering in Long Beach, California. He has a B.S. in Behavioral Science and is working on a MBA program. He is veteran of the wars in Bosnia and Herzegovina, serving in the United States Army as an officer, and is currently in the Reserves. His daughter Rebekah Beal is a high school sophomore, active in theater, color guard and recently a fashion runway model.
Daughter Chandra lives in Arroyo Grande, California where she has her B.A. from University of California at San Diego and a Master’s of Education at Alliant University. These days she works at Allan Hancock College as English as a Second Language Adjunct Faculty. She’s also a talented writer who wrote and published the popular books Splash Across Texas, The Relaxed Rabbit, and a book on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk with Richard. Chandra has a very successful publishing company, La Luna Publishing, writes for many publications and web sites, and recently published a DVD Massage Techniques for Your Companion Rabbit. She’s also a professional massage therapist and a Registered Yoga Teacher.
Younger brother John is a very successful conductor, film and television composer as well as a motion picture advertising producer who lives with his wife Helene in Toluca Lake, California. John is a combat veteran of the Vietnam War, having served in the United States Marine Corps.
Richard is past President for the University of California Santa Cruz’s Friends of the Long Marine Laboratory, is on the Board of Directors for the Richard and Kathy Beal Family Fund and is Treasurer for the Spirit Wind Ranch Homeowners Association. He recently joined the Board of Directors for the New Mexico Film Foundation. He’s an Executive Director for the TV pilot Midnight Shanghai, an Associate Producer for Operation Eco-Renovation with the Zakayla Productions Foundation, and is on the Film Technology Program Advisory Board for the University of New Mexico, Valencia campus.
He is former President of Horse Power Protection Projects, a Certified Horse Professional with the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association, a founding member of the Santa Fe Silver & Saddles Polo Club, Treasurer of the Santa Fe County Horse Coalition, and is active in the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association. He also is a volunteer with the National Day of the Cowboy organization. Richard has a very successful internet store Beal’s Cowboy Buckles™which sells western quality authentic cowboy buckles and he writes a blog about the cowboy lifestyle.
Free time is spent writing non-fiction books like his best selling Highway 17: The Road to Santa Cruz and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk – The Early Years, Never A Dull Moment, training and riding horses, collecting glass and contemporary art, and supporting community organizations. Richard has also been a background actor in numerous TV programs and movies including the hit series Longmire, Manhattan and many others.
Richard worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena during graduate school and later worked in the computer industry for 35 years with a variety of Silicon Valley institutions, including Stanford University and Apple Computer, was a Vice President at Internet pioneering company Netscape Communications, and finished his career working with startup companies and venture capitalists like Silver Lake Partners and The Barksdale Group. He was Editor for Codd and Date’s pioneering publication about relational databases “The Relational Journal.” Richard and Kathy own The Pacific Group and Kathy Beal Signature™ businesses for some of their professional activities.
During the mid-60s Richard served as a Captain in the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command as Deputy Squadron Commander for a Minuteman II ICBM facility and actually launched a test missile from Vandenburg Air Force Base in California. In the 70s he worked with Cesar Chavez and the United Farmworkers Union as an organizer, was involved in developing support centers for the homeless in Los Angeles and Pasadena, led a famous Christian commune dedicated to community improvement called Footsteps, and was a Manager at the Center for Employment Training in San Jose, California which provides free training and job placement for the disadvantaged. Richard has a BS degree from UCLA in International Finance, an MS in Sociology from the University of Missouri, and a Masters of Divinity degree in Theology from San Francisco Theological Seminary. Today he studies and tries to practice Buddhism.
